Peter is Head of Eversheds Sutherland Irish Pensions Group. He is acknowledged as a leading expert on pensions law and speaks regularly on pensions law both to academic institutions and at industry conferences. He comments regularly on pensions issues for RTÉ television and radio. He is ranked as a band 1 lawyer in pensions in the Chambers Europe Guide.

Peter is currently Chairman of the Irish Association of Pension Funds and is a former chairman of the Law Reform Committee of the Law Society of Ireland and a former Council member of the Association of Pensions Lawyers in Ireland.

Peter has experience as a director of Bord na Móna ESOP Trustee, TSB ESOP Trustee; and ACC Bank ESOP Trustee.

He has chaired a number of prominent regulatory committees, including the International Committee of the Irish Association of Pension Funds and the Law Reform Committee of the Law Society.

Peter‘s experience includes:

  • Providing DS Smith Plc with pensions support on the sale of Spicers, its office products wholesaling division, including its Irish subsidiary, to Unipapel for £200m. This was multi jurisdictional transaction which involved a number of Eversheds offices across Europe; 
  • Advising an Irish head-quartered multi-national on a potential €3 billion merger of its UK and Irish pension schemes, working jointly with UK colleagues; 
  • Advising the trustees of two Irish defined benefit pension schemes sponsored by a global multi-national group on securing the entirety of the schemes’ accrued liabilities via a €250m investment in a bespoke and highly complex insurance contract, working with Eversheds Paris; 
  • Advising on the establishment of an innovative cross-border IORPS; 
  • Advising on the transfer into the State of the funded pension schemes of the National Tourism Development Authority; 
  • Acted on the landmark Omega Pharma case defining the scope of sponsor pension obligations in Ireland;
  • Advising the trustees of two Irish defined benefit schemes sponsored by a Fortune 100 multi-national employer on securing the entirety of the schemes’ accrued liabilities via a €250 million investment in a bespoke insurance contract; 
  • Advising on the devising of a funding programme for the State transport authority (CIE)’s statutory pension schemes; 
  • Successfully represented the Pensions Ombudsman in a number of High Court appeals of his determinations; 
  • Providing training to the trustees of the An Post Superannuation schemes; 
  • Advising on the wind up of the INM plc defined benefit schemes; 
  • Advising on a number of pensions risk transfer and captive insurance transactions; 
  • Acting for the defendant disabled pension scheme beneficiaries in the landmark rectification case of Boliden Tara Mines v Cosgrove and Others; and 
  • Advising the Trustee of the Construction Workers’ Pension Scheme, the industry-wide scheme for construction workers and largest Irish scheme by number of members, on all aspects of its business.

Eversheds was awarded Pensions Law Firm of the Year at the European Pensions Irish Awards in both 2012 and 2013.
