Practice notes

Greg is a Partner in the international arbitration group of Eversheds Sutherland LLP. He is based in London after spending some years with the international disputes team in the Paris office. Greg specialises in public international law and international investment arbitration, and the resolution of international infrastructure, energy, oil and gas disputes. Greg has extensive experience of acting as counsel and advocate in institutional and ad hoc arbitrations, including under the ICSID, ICC, LCIA, CIETAC, and UNCITRAL Rules.

A selection of his recent experience includes advising:

  • a North Africa State in its defence of a $550M investment treaty claim brought by an East Asian construction contractor in relation to events arising from the Arab Spring. 
  • three Mauritian corporate investors and a UK national in parallel proceedings regarding two investment treaty disputes totaling $700M which they brought against a South Asian State concerning the importation of LNG and an LNG operating terminal.
  • a Dutch EPC contractor in an ICC dispute regarding an oil & gas project in Iraq
  • a Middle Eastern national oil company in two ad hoc arbitrations regarding breaches of a long-term gas sales agreement, valued in excess of $33bn. 
  • a Canadian oil & gas company in relation to a dispute regarding an oil producing concession in Egypt.
  • a Swiss oil trader in an ICC arbitration regarding breaches of a crude oil purchase agreement, involving issues of force majeure and commodity trading.
  • Lithuanian corporate investors in an international investment arbitration at ICSID against an East European State, in a dispute concerning a fertiliser and chemicals factory.
  • a Middle Eastern State, as counsel before a standing tribunal of 9 judges, in relation to public international law disputes concerning properties including construction equipment and materials, and properties with sensitive cultural value.
  • a North African State in relation an investment treaty claim brought under the OIC Treaty by a UAE investor regarding a series of construction projects.
  • a global design and construction management company in a dispute arising out of a FIDIC-based construction management contract, involving the design and management of a multi-billion dollar project in Azerbaijan.
  • Enforcing a foreign arbitral award of £158m in the English High Court against the State of Nigeria and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

Greg is co-founder and a former Director of Delos Dispute Resolution, an independent arbitration institution that promotes quality, flexibility, and time and cost efficiency in the resolution of international disputes.

Prior to his legal career, Greg qualified as a construction engineer and worked as a construction project manager in the UK and South Africa.
