Alastair is a Partner and the Location Head of the Litigation and Dispute Management group in Scotland.

He has worked as a dedicated litigation lawyer since qualifying in 1996 and a litigation partner since 2008.  His clients appreciate his hands-on approach and ability to simplify even the most complex of disputes.  Alastair is regularly instructed in high-value and complicated disputes in both the Court of Session and the Sheriff Court. His caseload covers a broad range of general commercial disputes; however, he is recognized as having particular experience in banking, finance, insolvency, negligence, fraud and contract disputes.

Whether you are pursuing or defending a claim or just seeking strategic advice, Alastair can advise you across the full spectrum of dispute resolution forums. He regularly represents clients in multiparty mediations, judicial factories, arbitrations, refers matters for expert determination, and raises proceedings using the abbreviated procedure offered by the Commercial Court in both the Sheriff Court and the Court of Session.

A large part of Alastair’s role is helping businesses like yours contemplate, prepare for and implement strategies to put you in the best possible position to manage contentious situations that arise. This spans simple debt recovery, multiparty multimillion pound litigations, or securing evidence in advance of taking any action. Alastair is one of only a few solicitors with extensive experience in successfully implementing multi-location dawn raids for recovery of evidence under Section 1 of the Administration of Justice Act.

Alastair has acted for most high street banks, utility companies, insurers, PLCs, as well as numerous professional partnerships, owner-managed businesses and SMEs across most sectors. He also regularly provides legal training to legal and business teams on all areas of litigation to allow clients to develop strategies to prevent and ultimately manage contentious situations.

Alastair is a regular speaker at conferences and training seminars, and has written articles on auditors liability, identity fraud, and the threat of fraud to business in Scotland for both the Herald and Scotsman newspapers.

In his spare time, he enjoys reading, travel, golf, rugby and hill walking. Alastair is passionate about adult literacy.

Alastair is experienced in all aspects of dispute resolution, having represented clients in multiparty mediations, acting as Arbiter's Clerk, representing clients in referring matters for expert determination and raising proceedings using the abbreviated procedure offered by the Commercial Court in both the Sheriff Court and the Court of Session.

He advises on all types of commercial disputes, with particular experience in disputes with an element of insolvency, banking and finance, and negligence, including:

  • fraud investigations
  • professional negligence claims
  • contract disputes
  • guarantee and security enforcement
  • contentious trusts and executries

  • multijurisdictional asset tracing and recovery
  • minority shareholder disputes
