Practice notes

Matt is a senior associate in our litigation and dispute management group. He specialises in acting for a broad range of clients in statutory/non-statutory inquiries and investigations. His recent experience includes acting for several core participant police forces in large strands of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA). He also acted for large national policing organisations in five strands of IICSA and advised these organisations at various stages of the Undercover Policing Inquiry.

Matt has an in-depth knowledge of criminal investigations and prosecutions, spending the earlier part of his career in private practice defending those accused of criminal offences. In light of this, he has extensive experience of advocacy and criminal/court room litigation.

Before joining Eversheds Sutherland, he was part of an in-house police legal services team where he gained extensive experience of advising police forces in all operational policing matters. This included:

  • Alcohol Licensing and Planning
  • Police Misconduct and Regulations
  • Proceeds of Crime Act applications
  • Applications for Sexual Harm Prevention Orders / Sexual Risk Orders
  • Closure order applications
  • Anti-Social behaviour injunctions
  • Football banning orders
  • Domestic Violence Protections Orders
  • Forced Marriage Protection Orders
  • Applications for disclosure of evidence from Family/Care Proceedings
  • Police Property Act proceedings
  • Inquests and Inquiries

In police misconduct matters, he was the presenting officer in public misconduct hearings on behalf of regional forces and advised police professional standards departments during their internal regulatory investigations.
