Hugo is a corporate partner specialising in financial services. Hugo specialises in transactions (M&A, Part VIIs, distribution arrangements and risk transfer transactions) in the insurance market as well as the wider financial institutions sector.

Hugo also advises on the full range of regulatory and company law relevant to (re)insurers with a particular focus on Solvency II.

Recent experience includes:

• Acting for Legal & General on the £2.4bn buy-out of the Nortel pension scheme, one of the largest pension de-risking deals in the UK to date

• Acting for Legal & General on the £1.1bn pension buy-out of the Vickers pension scheme.

• Acting for Aviva on the sale of its £5.3bn AUM real estate multi-manager business and the buy out of its rights as fund manager of the £1.3bn Encore+ fund

• Acting for Legal & General on the £800m longevity insurance with the Scottish Hydro-Electric Pension Scheme. The first transaction to use Legal & General’s UK-based pass through structure to transfer longevity risk to the end reinsurer.

• Acting for Markel on the acquisition of specialty lines insurer, ECIC.

• Acting for Scottish Widows on the £880m pensioner buy-in with the Littlewoods pension scheme.

• Acting on the establishment of Telefleet Insurance, a managing general agent providing fleet motor insurance using telematics technology.

• Acting for Markel on the acquisition of Cigna Insurance Services (Europe) Limited’s legal expenses business, Cigna Legal Protection.
