Practice notes

Jamie is a partner in the Finance group. He specialises in restructuring and in insolvency and banking litigation, with particular emphasis on cross-border and contentious insolvency and financial services restructuring. His clients include insolvency practitioners, banks, funds and large corporates.

His recent experience includes:

  • the contested application for the appointment of administrators to Force India Formula One Team Limited, and advising on the subsequent administration;
  • advising Network Rail Infrastructure Limited on the insolvency of Carillion Contracting Limited, involving the transfer of all Carillion’s Network Rail contracts to a new contractor, the safeguarding of over 700 jobs and the payment of many smaller subcontractors;
  • advising a number of landlords on company voluntary arrangements proposed by large retail companies;
  • successfully opposing an application by insolvency officeholders for court approval of a global compromise of causes of action held by the relevant company, and achieving the replacement of the relevant officeholders;
  • representing an international bank in relation to threatened proceedings resulting from the termination of synthetic securitisation transactions;
  • defending a commercial real estate fund in Commercial Court proceedings brought by a defaulted borrower; and
  • advising one of the largest creditors of Lehman Brothers International (Europe) on the “Waterfall” proceedings.

Jamie is ranked in Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners as a leading individual for restructuring and insolvency, and described as “a very clear thinker who has got the rare ability to present something that's highly complicated in a simple way" (Chambers and Partners 2018) and as “possessing an enviable ability to distil down complex issues, in order to give clients clear and well thought through advice’ (Legal 500 2017).

He is a member of the Law Society's Company Law Committee (and leads its Insolvency Law Sub-Committee). Jamie has higher rights of audience before the English courts and has also appeared before the Courts of the Dubai International Financial Centre.”
