Charlie is a Consultant in our Competition, EU & Trade Group, based in our Hong Kong office. He is qualified in Hong Kong, England & Wales and in Ireland.

Charlie advises across a wide spectrum of competition law issues, including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, commercial agreements and trade practices. Charlie has worked with clients in a number of sectors, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, financial services, food, media, mining and resources, rail, renewable energy, retail and water.

Recent work highlights include:

  • Undertaking a strategic secondment with a major international airline where he filled the role of the airline’s Group Senior Compliance Counsel. Charlie’s role at the airline involved advising on antitrust, data protection and bribery matters and he was in charge of leading a team of four people. The secondment was originally intended to be 4 months in duration but it was extended to 12 months;
  • Conducting a competition risk assurance exercise across all the business units of the Hong Kong office of a global bank;
  • Advising one of the world’s largest container shipping lines on the merger control implications of a joint venture with a Chinese SOE in the marine services sector;
  • Advising the UK’s largest manufacturer of commercial catering equipment in relation to a UK Competition and Market’s Authority investigation into minimum advertised pricing;
  • Advising on a number of metal neutral joint ventures in both the passenger and cargo aviation industries;
  • Carrying out mock dawn raids at client premises to test how they would respond if they were to be investigated by a competition authority; and
  • Developing and customising the Eversheds Sutherland’s Competition Law Online Toolkit for clients with employees located in countries across the world.

Charlie is a named lawyer in Legal 500 (Asia 2017) where he is noted for his “excellent understanding of what in-house counsel find useful” and his “superb interaction with business stakeholders”. Clients have commended Charlie for his “ability to provide clear, pragmatic legal advice”.
