Richard is a specialist consultant in the tax advisory division of the commercial department in our KZN office.
He is part of a highly respected tax consultancy network, ThinkTax, and retains his affiliation with this group whilst working at Eversheds Sutherland. Richard’s experience has been largely focussed on corporate tax advisory work, including corporate restructurings and re-organisations, mergers and acquisitions, tax due diligences, corporate and international tax queries, and assisting with SARS audits and disputes.
Richard graduated from Rhodes University in 2002 and completed his articles with Deloitte in Durban where he qualified as a chartered accountant. After articles, he completed a short-term secondment with Deloitte in Boston, USA.
Apart from two brief stints in commerce and industry, Richard has consulted in the tax field since 2007. He first joined the corporate tax team at KPMG in 2007 and thereafter PwC in 2010 where he worked as a senior manager until 2017.
Richard’s clients have spanned the private and public sector, with his areas of expertise including:
- domestic and international corporate structuring and reorganisations;
- mergers and acquisitions;
- debt structuring, including advice on interest deductibility, refinanced debt and tax efficient structuring of debt forgiveness;
- advising on the application of the hybrid equity provisions to various financial instruments;
- taxation of local and offshore trusts; and
- general income tax advisory services, including tax legal opinions, tax due diligences, voluntary disclosure applications, advance tax ruling applications and dispute resolution.
Richard has provided advisory services to both private and public sector clients, including:
- Advising on reorganisation transactions for one of South Africa’s largest listed sugar companies.
- Providing tax advisory support and advice to the South African subsidiary of a large multi-national shipping company headquartered in Japan.
- Advising and leading a reorganisation transaction for the South African subsidiaries of a large multi-national hearing aid company headquartered in Denmark and Singapore.
- Providing tax advisory support and advice to a large metals manufacturing company listed on the JSE.
- Assisting start-ups and emerging growth companies in corporate formation, corporate restructuring and financing transactions.

Richard has presented tax lectures and training seminars covering a wide range of corporate tax matters. He has also presented numerous budget day seminars where proposed domestic tax legislation is unpacked and discussed.
