Practice notes

Martyn is a senior associate in our Corporate Education group specialising in charity law. Martyn provides advice to:

  • charities, social enterprises and other not-for-profit organisations;
  • schools, academies, further education institutions and universities; and
  • corporate foundations and commercial collaborators with the charity and education sectors.

Martyn’s work includes advising on charity formations, incorporations and restructures, governance reviews and trading issues. He also advises on trustees’ duties, decision-making and dealing with the Charity Commission in relation to governance and property issues.

Recent work has included: securing Charity Commission consent to the remuneration of a chair overseeing a busy period for the charity; advising a charity on compliance with the Charities Act 2011 in relation to a substantial property sale; and advising a university client on its commercial arrangements with a private education provider.

Martyn has spoken on charity law issues at events for the Association of Colleges and the Sixth Form Colleges Association, and is also a member of the Charity Law Association.
