Practice notes

Ed is a Senior Associate in our Commercial Contracts team in London. He has specialist experience in international outsourcing deals, agency and distribution agreements and general commercial contracts.

Ed recently spent six months on secondment to the UK’s largest insurer, Aviva plc, and whilst there he took the lead on helping them to drive and deliver six of their most business critical non-IT outsourcings.

Ed has also advised the world’s largest building society on the outsourcing of its facilities management (FM) services and capital projects across its entire property portfolio. This major outsourcing, worth £350m, represented the client’s biggest ever commercial contract and meant that the outsourced services are successfully being delivered to its HQ, data centres, 15 corporate offices and all of its 700 high street outlets.

Prior to this, Ed assisted one of the world's largest financial institutions with the global outsourcing of their FM functions which span over seventy countries in Latin America, Asia Pacific, Europe, South Africa and the Middle East.

Ed also advises various clients on their agency and distribution networks primarily across Africa and the Middle East. He has experience working with Eversheds Sutherland colleagues in Italy and Germany and local firms in Angola, Nigeria, Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

In February 2017, Ed went on a nine-month sabbatical to South America to develop his Spanish language. In 2018, Ed was shortlisted for both Rising Star of the Year and Legal Advisor of the Year at the GSA Professional Awards.

Aside from his FM outsourcing experience, Ed has IT outsourcing experience having worked for one of the world's largest diversified mining companies on a multimillion dollar extension of its global managed networked IT services. The multimillion dollar outsourcing was on a global scale with client entities being based in South America, Canada, Australia and the UK amongst others.

Ed has also advised an automotive and aero engine manufacturing client with various outsourcings, including the outsourcing of their human resource services across the entirety of their global portfolio.

Contracts with teeth - the future of outsourcing

Ed has recently co-authored the thought leadership report "Delivering contracts with teeth" - the future of outsourcing. This report was produced from the results of a prior survey, conducted with the National Outsourcing Association, looking at which contractual provisions in outsourcing agreements are actually being used by customers at the coalface, to ensure that their suppliers perform.
