Practice notes

Cathryn Vanderspar is Head of Tax in our London office and co-heads our Indirect Real Estate Team. She has over 25 years experience as a tax lawyer covering corporate, finance, real estate and funds structuring and taxation. Her work includes advisory as well as transactional work.

Cathryn specialises in the structuring of direct and indirect real estate (including real estate debt) across all the asset classes and covering all taxes and structures, including joint ventures, corporate real estate, funds and REITs. This includes specialist areas such as residential, student accommodation, private equity, debt, healthcare and hotels. Advice covers structuring through the whole life of the asset.

In the funds arena, Cathryn has been very proactive on new product development for many years, including on the REIT, EUUT, PAIF and ACS. Her work includes unregulated, regulated and listed structures, where she has advised a wide range of clients.

Cathryn is an active member of key industry committees, including the BPF, AREF and the IPF and has participated in many HMRC and HMT working groups and successfully lobbied for changes of law.

She is the author of the REITs chapter in Tolley’s Taxation of Collective Investment.

She is also a ranked individual in Chambers.
