Practice notes
Shirley is a Partner in our HR Practice Group and Head of our Newcastle Employment team for our Newcastle office. She specialises in all aspects of employment law with extensive Employment Tribunal experience since qualification in 1997. She acts for private and public sector employers handling a broad range of contentious and non-contentious matters. Like other members of the team, Shirley conducts her own advocacy in the Employment Tribunal. She is also a member of the Local Government, health and education sector groups.
Shirley’s practice has a particular emphasis on complex areas of employment law such as equal pay, transfer of undertakings and complex discrimination issues. Shirley is Eversheds Sutherland international lead on equal pay and gender pay. Shirley is currently conducting in excess of 2,000 equal pay claims against a major supermarket and is supporting a number of other retailers in their preparation for mass equal pay claims against them.
Shirley was awarded Lawyer of the Year in the North East Law Awards, and regularly speaks at seminars and conferences including facilitating workshops at the Law Society Symposium on Gender Equality. Shirley regularly contributes to media articles and features in Chambers and Legal 500 directories. Chambers and Partners refers to a client who described Shirley as “extremely experienced and knowledgeable” and that “she is very able to consider what you are trying to get out of situation looking at the situation more holistically” and goes on to say that “she is particularly well regarded for her equal pay and discrimination work as well as her employment tribunal advocacy”
Shirley provides support to the firm in relation to its gender pay reporting obligations and sits on the steering committee of the firm’s gender network.
