Martin Bechtold is a Partner at Eversheds Sutherland and head of the firms’ competition and antitrust practice in Germany, practising out of Munich and Brussels.

He has more than 30 years of experience in antitrust law, advising on mergers, joint ventures cartels, dominance issues and all contractual matters which could raise competition law questions. He successfully advised the merging parties on numerous highly complex transactions including heavily contested acquisitions, hostile takeovers and in-depth investigations raising novel questions of merger control. Martin also assists undertakings in cartel investigations and settlement procedures as well as in investigations into alleged abuses of dominance.

After working with Germany’s FCO, Martin has been a partner for leading international law firms in Frankfurt and Brussels. He has extensive experience in advising and representing numerous clients across various industries, business areas and service sectors in significant merger control, antitrust and abuse proceedings in Germany and abroad as well as before the European Commission and the European courts in Luxembourg. His experience includes a wide variety of industries, including automotive, engineering, FMCG, financial services, pharmaceutical and healthcare, and technology.

Martin is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) and its antitrust section, the German Antitrust Lawyers’ Association (Studienvereinigung Kartellrecht), and the German Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (Deutsche Vereinigung für gewerblichen Rechtsschutz und Urheberrecht, GRUR).

He has been recognised as a leading antitrust and competition lawyer by various publications including Chambers Europe, Legal 500 Germany, and Germany’s JUVE Handbook. Furthermore he is recommended for Competition/Antitrust by Best Lawyers, both in Germany and Belgium.

Martin’s recent experience includes advising and representing:

  • A leading international pharmaceutical company on the merger control clearance with respect to its largest acquisition in Brussels and 30 other countries
  • A leading manufacturer of passenger transport systems in comprehensive antitrust proceedings, including use of the leniency programme with promise of immunity
  • A leading food manufacturer in connection with an investigation of the European Commission regarding the manufacturer’s rebate and conditions system
  • Companies from the automotive, IT, mineral oil and defence technology sectors in the context of hostile takeovers and hard-fought acquisition battles and representation before national antitrust authorities and the European Commission
