Michelle T Davies, International Head of Clean Energy and Sustainability, Eversheds Sutherland

Michelle set up the International Clean Energy and Sustainability Group 17 years ago which has advised on over 40GW of clean energy projects. Michelle is a partner in our corporate department and is International Head of the Clean Energy and Sustainability Group.

Michelle is actively involved in the clean energy sector both in the UK and globally. She advises across all renewable technologies including offshore and onshore wind, biomass, solar, hydro and biofuels. Michelle's focus is on corporate strategy within the sector including M&A, equity raising and investment and exit mechanisms. Michelle's clients range from utilities to IPPs, private equity and infrastructure funds, institutional investors, banks and governments.

Michelle has personally advised on over 10GW of renewable energy projects principally providing advice on M&A, investments and joint venture transactions. Clients Michelle has advised include Blackrock, PiP, EDF EN, Forewind, RWE, CGN, SSE, Statkraft, Centrica, Marubeni, Sojitz, Scatec plus many others.

Michelle is rated as a leading lawyer by the industry and has been the highest rated lawyer in wind for the last 3 years running by Word about Wind.

She writes regularly on the opportunities and challenges facing the sector and is a regular speaker at conferences including: MEED Dubai, MENA Dubai, SASIA Riyadh and MENA Jordan RenewableUK, REFF India, REFF China, Gulf Intelligence Doha Women in Energy Forum, BGCC Biomass conference, IMECHE Renewables Conference, REA biomass conference, Financing Carbon (London), Climate Finance (London), Environmental Green Bonds Conference, Westminster Energy Forum and Government Round Tables.

Michelle is actively involved in policy and regulation on clean energy. She is an advisory Board Member of the Middle East Solar Industry Association and is a founding member of the MESIA Women in Solar Group. She is also on the policy strategy group of the Saudi Arabia Solar Industry Association, is the Deputy Chair of the Ruk Offshore Strategy Group in the UK, was the only lawyer on the UK Government’s Offshore Wind Cost Reduction Task Force, is on the Advisory Board of the Climate Bond Initiative, PLC Environmental and the CBI Climate Change Working Group (London). Michelle is also on the board of the British Photovoltaic Association and is a founding member if the REA Finance Steering Group. She is on the Board of the Egypt British Business Council and has recently was asked to join the Dii Desert Energy Advisory Board.

Michelle is listed as “a leader in renewables” by ‘The Lawyer Hot 100 Lawyers'.

Michelle is rated as one of the leading lawyers in the renewable energy sector in Chambers as “rounding out the renewable energy practice with her corporate finance skills” and is held out by commentators as a “market leader”.

She was awarded “Solar Woman of the Year for the Middle East” by MESIA in 2015 for the second year running, and Eversheds was awarded “Middle East Law Firm of the Year”.

Michelle has been selected by the UK Government (BEIS) to be on the POWERful Women Group and is a winner of the Energy & Natural Resources Global Awards 2016.

Eversheds was ranked top as “the most active legal advisors to clean energy transactions in 2014 by the Clean Energy Pipeline Global league Tables in 2015 and is Winner of the MENASOL “Solar Project Finance/Advisors 2015 Award” and the MESIA Law Firm of the Year Award 2014/15.

Michelle is qualified as a lawyer in the UK and the US (New York Attorney) and has a First Class Degree from University College London and a Masters Degree from UC Berkeley. She is a Fulbright Scholar and a John Rankin Scholar.
