Richard is a construction and engineering associate with experience in the retail, consumer, finance and utilities sectors.
A construction and engineering associate within Eversheds Sutherland’s Litigation & Dispute Management Group. He has worked as a construction lawyer since joining the firm in 2018. This followed several years working in the field of insurance litigation.
Whether a developer, commercial landlord, commercial tenant, lender or utilities provider Richard can assist in drafting and managing the delivery of standard form building contracts and appointments and advise generally on contract procurement, whether under the JCT, NEC or ICC suites of contract. Richard also oversees due diligence and provides construction input into banking and real estate transactions.
Richard has acted for real estate, retail and banking clients and works for clients across a number of sectors with particularly strong experience in the retail, consumer and financial sectors.
Richard has acted on a number of significant transactions for clients within the private and public sector including:
- helping a local council negotiate the building contract for the fit-out of its new headquarters, as well as assisting on the real estate side with the due diligence of the construction documents procured by the developer of the premises;
- providing construction input into the sale of a large retail premises by a national real estate client operating in the retail sector;
- leading in a contractual dispute with a building contractor on behalf of a national retail sector client in relation to water ingress at the client’s premises. The dispute was resolved successfully and a negotiated damages settlement was secured in the client’s favour;
- assisting real estate colleagues on the negotiation of an agreement for lease on behalf of a national retail client in relation to a large retail unit. Then led on the negotiations of the construction contracts in respect of the associated works to redevelop the unit.
