Dr. Thomas J. Farkas is a Principal Associate in the Commercial practice group at Eversheds Sutherland in Munich. He specializes in intellectual property and related commercial aspects. Thomas has many years of experience in:

  • Contentious and non-contentious trademark, design and copyright matters
  • Unfair competition law
  • Trade secrets and know-how
  • Regulatory law
  • Drafting and negotiating all types of intellectual property agreements

Thomas advises and represents national and international clients in litigation in all areas relating to IP. His clients include manufacturers of consumer and luxury goods, financial service providers, media companies, advertising agencies and technology companies.

Before joining Eversheds Sutherland, Thomas experience includes working in the IP team of another international leading law firm and as an in-house IP counsel for a global player in the fashion industry.

Since 2012, Thomas is a Visiting Industry Senior Lecturer at the Queen Mary University of London focussing on current topics in IP law. In addition, he is a lecturer at AMD Academy of Fashion and Design (AMD Akademie für Mode und Design) in the area of trademark, design and advertising law. Furthermore, he is a regular visiting lecturer for IP law at the IP Summer School in Bogota held by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Thomas regularly publishes articles on IP-relevant topics.

Thomas studied law at the Humboldt University of Berlin and earned his LL.M. degree in IP Law at the Queen Mary University of London. He was a research fellow at the Institute of Intellectual Property in Tokyo, Japan and completed his doctoral thesis as a scholarship holder at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition focussing on the protection of ideas and designs.

Thomas is a member of the German IP Society (GRUR).

Thomas' recent experience includes:

  • Defending the design rights of an international fashion company before German courts against design imitations
  • Representing an international sporting goods company before German courts related to sponsoring and licensing agreements with international football stars
  • Advising a leading financial services provider regarding the launch of a new mobile-payment solution in Europe
  • Defending the trademark portfolio of an international food company before the Court of the European Union
  • Advising a manufacturer of sporting goods on the purchase of a large trademark and IP portfolio
