Practice notes

David is a Partner in our Construction and Engineering team who specialises in advising on non-contentious construction and engineering matters. David has 27 years’ experience of advising on the procurement of major energy, transport, water and other utilities construction and engineering projects. Clients particularly value David’s significant direct industry knowledge gained during his time previously working as a Chartered Civil Engineer in the utilities sector.

He is a nationally recognised market leader in advising on major infrastructure projects having advised private, public and utility sector clients on over £15 billion worth of construction and engineering contracts of national and international strategic importance in recent years. He advises on civil engineering, mechanical & electrical engineering, renewable energy and process plant projects. David is experienced in the full range of standard form construction contracts including JCT, FIDIC, ICE/ICC, MF/1 and IChemE forms and is a particular specialist in advising on the full NEC suite of contracts. In addition, he is a market leader in drafting complex bespoke alliancing, partnering and framework agreements having advised on such contracts with a value of over £1 billion in each of the water, railways, electricity and gas sectors.

His experience includes: acting as construction adviser to Severn Trent Water in relation to their £multi-billion AMP5 to AMP8 capital investment programmes for the procurement of water and wastewater infrastructure; acting for National Grid Group in the procurement of their £multi-billion gas distribution pipeline and electricity transmission alliance agreements; acting for Network Rail in the procurement of their current major redevelopment of London Bridge Station and the related £multi-billion Thameslink development programme; acting for the employer in procuring the Coventry Arena regeneration project, including the 33,000 capacity Wasps Rugby Union and Coventry City Football Club stadium (the Ricoh Arena).

He is a recommended lawyer in the UK editions of both Chambers 2018 (which comments “His user-friendly style and approach provides confidence and reassurance to clients in a complex and challenging environment”) and Legal 500
