Practice notes

Lorcan has recently re-joined as a partner in our Dublin pensions team. Having trained with us, he has gained extensive pensions law experience at leading firms in both Ireland and the UK. Lorcan advises corporate and trustee clients on all aspects of the establishment and operation of defined benefit and defined contribution pension schemes. This includes assisting clients with scheme restructurings, funding arrangements and pensions disputes. He has particular expertise in advising on the pensions implications of corporate transactions and group restructurings.

Lorcan’s experience includes advising:

  • the trustees of a large defined benefit scheme on the negotiation and implementation of a long term funding and investment strategy for the scheme;
  • on the merger of two Irish defined benefit schemes operated by a multi-national healthcare product provider;
  • on the sale of a large pharmaceutical distribution business, including advising on the implications of the sale for a number of multi-employer defined benefit and defined contribution schemes operated within the seller’s wider group;
  • various trustee and employer clients on the restructuring of their pension arrangements, including scheme wind-ups, closure to future benefit accrual, benefit redesign, and applications to reduce accrued benefits under section 50 of the Pensions Act; and
  • various trustee and employer clients in relation to funding arrangements, including putting in place contingent assets and guarantees.
