Principal Associate David Roberts is the Head of the Eversheds Licensing Team. He is an experienced Licensing solicitor with a variety of advocacy experience before licensing authorities and the Magistrates’ Court in both liquor/entertainment and gaming licensing matters nationally. David is rated as a “Star Associate” in Chambers and Partners which has had him “noted for his responsiveness and his flair for client management”.

David has developed a national reputation in his field and has been recognised for his expertise in dealing with particularly niche and contentious licensing applications. The 2016 edition of the Legal 500 recognises “Eversheds LLP’s ‘responsive and efficient’ team is headed by ‘very knowledgeable and experienced’ Principal Associate David Roberts, who is ‘technically very accomplished’. David regularly advises clients under both the Licensing Act 2003 and Gambling Act 2005 and is also experienced in High court and Court of Appeal Judicial Review proceedings on points of law.

David’s team acts for many well-known names in the hotel, leisure, gambling and retail sectors including: Hilton Worldwide; Four Seasons Hotels; Genting UK Plc; Gala Bingo; Central England Co-operative; Paddy Power; Land Securities and Hammerson.

Recent experiences include advising Four Seasons Hotels on obtaining licences for the development of the 5 Star 10 Trinity Square Hotel in London, obtaining a 4am licence extension from Westminster City Council Licensing Authority for Mayfair’s celebrity nightclub Drama, and successfully obtaining a Premises Licence for the Emirates Airline Cable Car across the Thames following opposition from local residents.

In addition to advising clients specifically on their licensing applications and regulatory compliance, David works very closely with Corporate and Real Estate colleagues to advise on licensing issues arising out of property and business acquisition and disposal transactions.

David is a member is a member of the Institute of Licensing and an active participant of the Gambling Commission’s Industry Lawyers forum.

David has a long-established experience of the retail/leisure trade, and prior to joining Eversheds in 2001 commenced his legal training in-house with pub and hotel operator De Vere Group Plc (formerly Greenalls Group plc).
