Practice notes

Kirsten is a Senior Associate in the Litigation and Dispute Management practice group. She represents clients in several commercial litigations before the Singapore High Court and Court of Appeal, and international arbitrations seated in Singapore and other common and civil law jurisdictions, administered by arbitral institutions including the SIAC, KLRCA/AIAC, ICC, HKIAC and CIETAC. She advises on international arbitration, public international law, competition and aviation law, and heads the Associates’ Working Group on Arbitration in Singapore.

Her recent experience includes: successfully acting for the Defendant in resisting the Plaintiff’s challenge against a Tribunal’s jurisdictional ruling (BQP v BQQ [2018] SGHC 55), acting for a claimant in the forestry sector in a US$50m SIAC arbitration, acting for a state-owned entity in a multimillion dollar SIAC arbitration over disputes arising from the construction of a thermal power project in Asia (multi-party, multi-contract arbitrations), successfully acting for a client in enforcing a CIETAC arbitral award in Singapore, successfully acting for a client in dispute with directors in a Singapore-listed company in parallel High Court and arbitral proceedings, successfully acting for claimant in a KLRCA/AIAC arbitration against one of Malaysia’s telecommunication service providers, advising a State on the sovereign immunity of sunken warships, advising airline clients on aviation laws, rendering research assistance on an international maritime boundary delimitation dispute, assisting a Tribunal in an SIAC arbitration pertaining to disputes arising from a long term gas supply contract (on minimum take-or-pay clauses).

Kirsten interned at the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC) and was a presenter at the SCC Centennial ‘Arbitrating for Peace’ Symposium in January 2017 on the Taba arbitration between Egypt and Israel. She holds an LLM in International Commercial Arbitration with distinction from Stockholm University and was the sole recipient of the Swedish Arbitration Association scholarship. As Stockholm University’s nominee, she was awarded the ‘Global Swede’ scholarship diploma in 2017 by the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

She is a Fellow of the Asian Institute of Alternative Dispute Resolution (AIADR), Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (SIArb), International Council for Commercial Arbitration (Young ICCA), Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA) South East Asia Chapter, and Individual Associate of the American Bar Association International Law Section.

She passed the Singapore bar exams in 2011 with distinction in arbitration and was admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in July 2012.
