Stephan advises and represents clients in complex disputes before state courts and arbitration tribunals as well as in out-of-court dispute resolution. 

His clients include medium-sized companies as well as international corporations and states. His practice focuses on disputes in the areas of contract and commercial law, corporate law including post-M&A, plant construction and proceedings concerning the declaration of enforceability and enforcement of arbitral awards. He also advises in the areas of international private and civil procedure law as well as contract law.

Stephan is a Bar-certified Specialist Lawyer for International Business Law (Fachanwalt für Internationales Wirtschaftsrecht) and a trained commercial mediator.

Stephan’s recent experience includes:

  • Defending a North African state against the declaration of enforceability of an investment arbitration award (ICC) in Germany (OLG Munich 34 Sch 3/20)
  • Acting as counsel for a world-leading steel producer in an arbitration (ICC) concerning a delivery dispute
  • Acting for a French group in an arbitration (ad hoc) concerning a plant construction dispute
  • Representing and advising a German company in several court proceedings in Germany and France concerning a post-M&A dispute in connection with defects of solar power systems in France
  • Regular representation of a North African state in various court proceedings
  • Defending two former board members of a German stock corporation against claims for damages due to alleged breaches of duty in office
  • Acting as counsel for a worldwide operating industrial company in an arbitration (ad hoc) against an Indian customer due to the non-acceptance of components for a power plant in Yemen
  • Acting as counsel for a German manufacturer of electronic components in various DIS arbitrations
  • Acting as counsel for a shareholder of a leading German private bank in an arbitration (ad hoc) regarding a shareholder dispute
  • Regular advice and representation of a medium-sized company in the negotiation of supply contracts for railway wagons

Stephan studied law in the German-French master's degree program at the University of Cologne and Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne) and prepared for the first state examination at the University of Münster. He holds a Master of Laws from the Universities of Cologne and Paris I, a Maîtrise en Droit from the University Paris I and a Doctor of Laws from the University of Cologne. He wrote his doctor thesis on a subject of French and European procedural law.
