Practice notes

Stephan is a Partner in the litigation and dispute management group in our Hamburg office. He specializes in complex international disputes before state courts and arbitration tribunals.

Stephan focuses on commercial and corporate law disputes, in particular post-M&A, shareholder and D&O disputes. He also has profound experience in international trade and plant construction disputes. Stephan’s arbitration experience includes domestic and international ad-hoc proceedings as well as proceedings under the rules of arbitration institutions such as ICC and DIS.

Stephan studied law in the German French master degree program at the University of Cologne and Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne) and afterwards at the University of Münster. He holds a Master of Laws from the Universities of Cologne and Paris I, a Maîtrise en Droit from the University Paris I and a Doctor of Laws from the University of Cologne. He wrote his doctor thesis on a subject of French and European procedural law. Before joining Eversheds Sutherland in February 2019, Stephan was a Salary Partner at Taylor Wessing.

He is a member of various arbitration initiatives such as German Initiative of Young Arbitrators (DIS40) and Hamburg Arbitration Circle (HAC).

Stephan is recommended by Best Lawyers/Handelsblatt for Litigation, Arbitration and Mediation. Furthermore, he is recommended by Legal 500 Germany for dispute resolution.

Stephan’s recent experience includes:

  • Representing and advising a German company in several court proceedings in Germany and France concerning a post-M&A dispute in connection with defects of solar power systems in France
  • Defending two former board members of a German stock corporation against claims for damages due to alleged breaches of duty in office
  • Acting as counsel for a worldwide operating industrial company in ad hoc arbitration proceedings against an Indian customer due to the non-acceptance of components for a power plant in Yemen
  • Acting as counsel for a German manufacturer of electronic components in various DIS arbitration proceedings
  • Acting as counsel for a shareholder of a leading German private bank in ad hoc arbitration proceedings regarding a shareholder dispute
