Practice notes

David heads Eversheds Sutherland’s IP practice in the UK. He handles both contentious and transactional IP work and has for many years been ranked as one of the leading lawyers practising in this field.

David has over twenty years’ experience of handling IP litigation and transactional work across a wide range of industry sectors, including technology, media, consumer goods, financial services and FinTech.

David has extensive trial experience and has appeared as a solicitor- advocate before the English High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Court of Justice of the European Union.

He regularly advises on IP-heavy acquisitions, disposals and licences, including some of the most high-profile deals of recent years.

David and his team also advise on advertising and marketing regulation and on libel and reputation management issues for corporates and financial institutions.

Professional Activities

David is a lecturer and tutor on Oxford University’s Diploma of IP Law and Practice and Co-Chair of The Intellectual Property Lawyers’ Organisation (‘TIPLO’).

Awards and Rankings

David has for many years been ranked as a leading IP practitioner by all of the main legal directories, including Chambers, The Legal 500, Managing Intellectual Property and World Trademark Review. He was named Head of IP in Legal Business Magazine’s ‘Fantasy Law Firm’ comprising those lawyers whom Legal Business regards as the best in their field.

Recent cases and transactions which David has handled include:

  • representing a cryptocurrency company in trade secret and software copyright litigation concerning its trading platform
  • acting for a global commodity supplier in patent and trade secret litigation
  • advising a leading investment bank on advertising and marketing regulation around the launch of an online savings platform
  • handling the disposal of all IP assets of a global travel company following its insolvency.
