Practice notes
Michael is an Associate in the Consumer Finance team within our Company Commercial practice group, having qualified into the team in April 2016.
Michael assists all members of the team, who between them, cover mortgage law and regulation, the consumer credit regime, and savings/deposit products. Clients are primarily financial services institutions ranging from established entities to emerging lenders, but also include businesses where lending is not their main function. As part of this, Michael’s role includes:
- reviewing and drafting regulated consumer credit and consumer hire products for compliance with the requirements of the consumer credit regime, including the FCA Handbook as applicable;
- advising on financial promotions and associated compliance issues;
- advising on authorisation for conducting regulated activities with consumers based on different types of product;
- advising on the regulated mortgage lending regime; and
- advising on the legal requirements and regulatory considerations which should be taken into account when formulating the scope of remediation projects or during due diligence on transactions.
Michael has also been on secondment at Barclays Bank for all of 2017, specifically within in the mortgages legal team. His role there was primarily to support the team by dealing with all queries from the front line business which relate to mortgages, ranging from advising on legal issues around a property which the Bank is looking to lend on, to enforcement of the mortgage. He also managed a number of projects, such as researching and advising on emerging issues for the bank in the conveyancing process which may create legal risk in order to formulate/amend lending policy as appropriate, drafting changes to regulated lending documentation, and creating bespoke training for Bank employees on regulated lending. All of these tasks have involved communicating with a range of stakeholders from around the business such as credit, risk, government relations, as well as heads of different customer segments.
Michael is also a co-chair of Eversheds Sutherland's LGBT+ employee and supporters network, Perspective.
